Subject: Understanding Post-harvesting technology
Posted by:drica2009.
Time:1:07 pm.

When it comes to processing perishable crops, what is done to the crops the moment they are uprooted from the ground determines the final quality of the said crop, to a very large extent. As the name suggests, the act of processing the crop ( Dusting, sorting, cleaning and packing the crops) after the harvest, is called Post harvesting. It becomes a critical part in processing perishable food crops because these crops have a tendency to deteriorate from the moment they are uprooted from the farms. Processed food items, fresh farm produce or whatever it is that the crop ought to be sold for, the out put of the post harvesting technology largely determines the caliber of the processed food crop.

Though it might seem like an obvious thing to do post harvesting the crop, it is still a difficult task to be achieved either due to lack of awareness or due to the lack of infrastructure. Post harvest usually consists of cleaning up of the crops, removing moisture and bringing down the pace of the chemical reactions that usually occur then. These chemical reactions can also occur, in some cases, when two crops are stored together, given a particular temperature. To avoid this and also to streamline the post harvesting operations a lot of expensive equipment has to be put in place like complicated sorting, packing, storing and facilities for moving perishable crops about in storage areas are duly put in place, more so,if we are talking about a fully functional industrial size which comes equipped with conveyor belts for moving these crops around, cold-storage facilities,atmosphere-controllable storage equipment and advanced sorting and harvesting machinery.

The above mentioned sophisticated equipment, coupled with state-of-the-art technology managed efficiently with superbly trained staff should be able to battle with the time constrained challenge of being able to produce the best quality output, especially with regards to the perishable food crops and hence becomes an important element in the food processing chain.

Be it your home garden which delivers some kind of perishables or an industrial unit, a few things have to be considered carefully and attended to. Firstly, the crops need to be culled (removal of damaged crop elements). Secondly, the perishables need to be cooled immediately and maintained at that temperature to avoid further possible degradation of crops and finally, the crops have to be handled expertly and with care.

Subject: Smoothies and Frozen Drinks - Secrets to Making the Perfect Frosty Summer Drink
Posted by:drica2009.
Time:11:07 pm.

What's more refreshing than a frozen drink? If you're looking for a delicious, healthy snack your kids will love, then a smoothie is a great choice. Or if you want to serve cooling refreshments to your summer guests, then a frozen drink is a real party pleaser. But there's more to it than just tossing ingredients into a blender. Follow these secrets to making the perfect fruit smoothie or frozen drink and you'll become an expert!

Freeze the fruit ahead of time. It doesn't matter whether your smoothie recipe tells you to do this or not, this little trick will make for a thicker smoothie. Wash your fruit, cut in bite size pieces (slice bananas), spread out on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze. When your fruit is frozen, you can pack it together in a storage bag or container in the freezer. For best results, use within 2 weeks.

Use fresh ripe fruit for the best flavor.

When the recipe calls for ice, crushed ice is best. If you don't have crushed ice, you can always place ice cubes in a sealable plastic bag on a cutting board and "crush" the cubes with a hammer, rolling pin, frying pan, etc.

The blending order is important. First add the cold liquid, then the fruit, and last add the frozen yogurt (or ice cream) or the ice.

Considering using a Smoothie Maker. They really work! Unless you have a powerful blender, it will labor when pulverizing ice.

How to Fix a Less Than Perfect Recipe

Making smoothies and frozen drinks is not an exact science. You can start with a recipe and always change and improve it. Here are some basic tips to adapt any smoothie recipe to your own tastes and requirements.

To make it thicker: Add more ice, frozen fruit (especially a banana), frozen yogurt, ice cream or sherbet

If it's too thick: Add milk, water, or juice and blend again. Be careful when adding a lot of juice, because it will change the flavor of the frozen drink.

To make it creamier: Use ice cream, frozen yogurt or vanilla yogurt instead of the ice.

To reduce calories: Replace whole milk with skim milk. Use frozen yogurt or sorbet instead of ice cream. Add fresh fruit instead of sweetened frozen fruit. Use a sugar substitute. Choose nonfat yogurt over regular yogurt.

To make it sweeter: Add honey, maple syrup, a little sugar (superfine or confectioner's sugar blends best) or Splenda.

If it's too sweet: add a little lemon juice or even lemonade.

To make it healthier: Add protein power or brewer's yeast available from the health food or vitamin store (and some supermarkets).

To add fiber: Add ground flax seed, wheat bran, wheat germ, and leave the skin on the fruit.

To make a frozen drink with alcohol: Substitute rum, vodka, or a fruit liqueur for an equal part of the juice or other liquid called for in the recipe. Pour into a margarita or hurricane glass and garnish with fresh fruit. However, if a frozen drink calls for alcohol and you prefer a non-acoholic beverage, simply substitute juice, milk or water for the spirits.

To add extra flavor: Use very ripe, quality fresh fruit. A little cocoa powder gives it a chocolatey flavor. Try a few drops of almond extract or some of the other fruit extracts sold in the baking section of the supermarket. Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg.

Recipes to get you started:

Subject: Goji Berries- 7 reasons why to try them
Posted by:drica2009.
Time:3:07 pm.

Below mentioned is a list of reasons why we should go and try goji berries.

1. Live Longer

If you have done some research into goji berries then you may have come across the stories of the 256 year old man who attributed his longevity to goji berries and gingko. Goji berries are full of powerful antioxidants that help to defend against premature aging.

2. Look and Feel Younger

Some studies suggest that goji berries stimulates the release of HGH (human growth hormone), the youth hormone. The benefits of natural HGH are include reduction of body fat, better sleep, and improved memory, accelerated healing, restored libido, and a more youthful appearance.

3. Improve Your Memory

Goji berries contain betaine which is converted in the body into choline, a substance that is believed to enhance memory and recall ability.

4. Have a Happy Spirit

In Asia it is said that constant consumption of dried goji berries brings on a cheerful attitude, so much so that is commonly known as the "happy berry".

5. Sleep Better

Another thing this fantastic fruit is supposed to help with is sleep.

6. Improve Your Vision

The dried goji berry is supposed to help improve your vision. One almost probably aspect is its ability to reduce the time it takes for vision to adapt to darkness. This is possibly due to its powerful antioxidant carotenoids.

7. Heighten Immune Response

Chinese physicians reportedly use Goji polysaccharides to enhance and balance the activity of all classes of immune cells, including T-cells, cytotoxic T-cells, NK cells, lysozyme, and the immunoglobulins IgG and IgA. Although this probably means as little to you as it does to me, an enhanced immune system has got to be good. How many days have you lost so far this year due to sickness?

Subject: Gourmet Cookies as Wedding Favors
Posted by:drica2009.
Time:6:07 am.

As per the custom that originated among European aristocracy long ago, all guests that attend a wedding are offered wedding favors as a token of appreciation and thanks for having attended the ceremony. There are wide range of inexpensive favor gifts to choose from in the market. However, nothing beats specially made gourmet cookies that not only show the immense care that went into making them for each and every guest, but also are a delight to consume.

There are many exceptional gourmet cookies available in the market. Nonetheless, many couples prefer to use their own recipes to add that surprise element to the gift. You can choose to have the cookies in any shape you want, and have them frosted over with the names of the guests for a very personalized wedding favor. The name of your guest artistically written can make a great difference in the gift; it adds to the sentimental value and makes the occasion even more special.

With a little inspiration and creativity you can make cookies shaped as flowers, hearts, bouquets, etc. The cookies can be arranged into an exquisitely beautiful box that adds to the value of the gift. The packaging is as important as the quality of the cookies packed within. If you are unable to get special boxes the cookies can be set into tiny baskets, or even cellophane miniature sacks bound with gold ribbons.

If you choose to purchase the gourmet cookies instead of making them, you will find many types available in supermarkets and gourmet Shoppe's. The cost of the cookies depend on what type of cookie you prefer. You can choose from among hundreds of special wedding designs and have them monogrammed with the names or initials of your guests. You can even have your photographs on the cookies, though this would cost you extra. You can use icing to create any type of message or design matched to the theme of the wedding.

For those who are good in the kitchen or have a great recipe, cookies baked at home can save more than half of the budget that would have otherwise gone for the confectionary-made ones. In addition to the yummy gourmet cookies, gift boxes might also contain an assortment of chocolate, candies and other similar goodies.

Subject: Why We All Should Pickle at Home
Posted by:drica2009.
Time:11:07 pm.

One of the great things about pickles is that anyone, and I DO mean anyone, can make their own right in their own home. There is no special skill and just a bit of pickling knowledge needed. You will also need just a few simple to get, cheap items that you can find at most of your local shopping outlets. Not only is making pickles fun, but you will save money as well, and impress your friends and neighbors. There really is no good reason that you shouldnt learn to make pickles at home. So lets take a look at some of the items that you will need to get started.

First off, you will need some pickling jars, some lids, and some rings. These can be found in a number of places, including various online stores. You will also need a water bath canner; this is basically just a large pot that will be used to create the seal on your pickle jars. I also highly recommend purchasing a pair of tongs; it will help you to avoid getting burned. This is really all of the equipment that you need to get started. So now we need to decide what we want to pickle. Wait, pickles are just made from cucumbers right? Right, but you can pickle a whole lot of other things, including fruits, other veggies, and sometimes even meats; pickling cucumbers is just the beginning. However, there are also many tasty variations of your classic dill cucumber pickles, my personal favorites being spicy garlic pickles. There are many other items that can make your pickling go much smoother, however, they are purely optional. They may just be able to make your life a little bit easier.

So now you have all of the items that you need to pickle, whats next? Well for your first batch, it will be best to pickle cucumbers, they are considered the easiest items to pickle, and quite frankly they are the hardest to mess up. Your main ingredients will consist of vinegar, sugar, salt, mustard seed, and the rest is up to you, and your recipe. You are free to add items such as sliced onions, garlic cloves, bunches of dill, etc. Whatever flavor you want your pickles to have, is up to you and your imagination.

Once you have completed your pickles and sealed them in your pickling jars, the only thing left for you to do is wait. The time for cucumbers to pickle is usually from 4 to 6 weeks, but it does not hurt to wait a little longer rather than shorter, just to be safe. Once the 4 to 6 weeks has elapsed, open up a jar, and enjoy your creation! Why stop there though; share your pickles with your friends, family, or even the people you work with. You will be amazed at how people react to homemade pickles. People just love things that are homemade, especially things they dont know how to make themselves. But they dont have to know how easy it was, so enjoy the compliments and especially enjoy the pickles.

Once you have pickled cucumbers once or twice, you may want to try pickling something else, such as asparagus, or watermelon rind. Yes, you can pickle watermelon rind, and it is actually quite good. The sky becomes the limit with what you can pickle, and all of the different ways that you can pickle it. Spicy carrot pickles, crunchy cucumber pickles, garlicky pickled eggs, the choice is yours. I hope you try out pickling for yourself, and see just how fun and tasty it can be. If you are not sure where to start, you may want to check out my Ultimate Guide to Pickling for step by step instructions and over 30 recipes for you to try.

I have a question! any of youcomputer buffs who think they can help me, please!!! I am begging you!

My problem:

I have windows XP, and the IE (internet explorer) portion of the program for some odd reason will not let me type. I can type saving, on the internet, anywhere else, but not on IE. This happens whether I am on the internet or not. My system is compatable,m so there is no worries there. (I have a p4 1.8 gb, 256 K, and 80 gb hd.)

How do I fix this WITHOUT having to start over and formatting?

Here's what I have done:

*I have defragged.
*I have done clean disk (like those two really make a difference, but i am anal about it)
*I have run scan disk
*I have downloaded the current version of IE, and still no typing is allowed.
*I have beaten it with a fish.

Aside from clearing it all out and formatting, is there anything else I can do? Any suggestions? Formatting would be a lot of work. :(
